Pearl & the Oysters, international adventurers in eclectic pop, crash-landed their starship in Los Angeles in 2020. Born and schooled in Paris, Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack embarked on a nomadic romance fueled by music, performing in New York’s jazz clubs and navigating the DIY art rock scene in Gainesville, Florida. Now based in Los Angeles, their evolving sound fits perfectly within a vibrant scene, where their space-age jazz-pop is widely appreciated.
Juliette and Joachim met on the first day of high school in Paris. Both bespectacled and music-obsessed, they were drawn together by a "poetic connection" and shared heroes like Burt Bacharach, Kurt Weill, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. "It’s very French of us to be into Brazil, but like, 1960s-French," Joachim notes. Their shared passion for music deepened at the Sorbonne, where they studied musicology and developed a romantic relationship. Despite facing resistance from academic mentors—Joachim’s classical composition teachers at the conservatory didn’t understand his pop music pursuits—they stayed committed to their craft.
Joachim, who later earned a PhD at the University of Florida, focused his dissertation on Jobim, MPB, and Tropicália, incorporating analog synths into his musical approach. Juliette's love for jazz and the Great American Songbook, alongside the pair's shared admiration for global pop fusion acts like Yellow Magic Orchestra, shaped the kaleidoscopic sound of Pearl & the Oysters, which debuted in 2017. Their unique style caught the attention of Peanut Butter Wolf’s label, Stones Throw, leading to the release of their 2023 album Coast 2 Coast.
On their second LP with Stones Throw, Planet Pearl, the duo invites fans on another celestial journey. The album conjures tropical waters, moonlight, and exotic landscapes but also explores the alienation of navigating Los Angeles, the digital age, and the loneliness of constant touring. While Planet Pearl remains lush and texturally beautiful, it marks a more bittersweet, reflective stage in the band's evolution. The album reflects a deeper level of intimacy, tackling themes of rootlessness and the complexities of life as modern-day nomads.
For Pearl & the Oysters, Planet Pearl is a bold next step in their artistic journey, blending charm with darker undertones. Their continued experimentation with sound and persona hints at a future filled with growth and artistic exploration.
