HOUSE BAND
This class offers students the unique opportunity to form the Northwest School’s own House Band. Students in the class study, perform, and ultimately create their own music in a wide range of popular styles, including folk, indie, rock, bluegrass, and jazz. Students get hands-on experience with tools essential to performing in a band, including working with microphones, using amplification, and working with effects such as looping, delay, and distortion.
JAZZ BAND
This is an auditioned ensemble for students with at least two years of experience (or by audition). This band acquaints students with the basics of reading and performing jazz literature. A variety of styles and concepts are explored, including traditional and modern jazz, improvisation, the blues, Latin, funk, and rock. Students will perform in a variety of settings as a big band as well as small combos. Students will also explore the musical and political impact of jazz throughout history.
NORTHWEST SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
We believe arts education is vital to preparing for a fulfilling life, and is intimately connected to academics. Requiring critical thinking, discipline, self-reflection—and often courage to step out of one’s comfort zone—art offers students fundamental experiences in challenge and accomplishment. It also opens their minds to seeing new pathways to problem-solving. To that end, every student at The Northwest School takes two arts classes at all times, ensuring that no one graduates without having danced, made music, acted onstage and created something of their own vision.
