Description
King Yellowman has an incredible history in reggae music, overcoming significant obstacles to become a legend. Raised in the Maxfield Home orphanage in Kingston and navigating life as an albino in Jamaica, he rose to prominence, becoming the biggest reggae artist since Bob Marley. After winning a talent contest at Tastee Patties in Kingston, Yellowman captivated audiences with his boastful and sometimes bodacious lyrics, his ability to ride rhythms, and his crowd-pleasing performances. Working with the Ace Sound System in St. Thomas, he drew massive crowds at his dancehall shows and began collaborating with various producers, at times releasing up to five albums a year. This prolific output led to a contract with CBS Records, but his career was interrupted by a jaw cancer diagnosis in 1986. Defying a grim prognosis, he made a triumphant comeback with "Blueberry Hill" and continued to release vibrant music, forming a lasting partnership with producer Phillip 'Fatis' Burrell and RAS Records.
Yellowman, known as the rudest dancehall toaster of the 1980s, made as many enemies as fans with his controversial, often overtly sexist lyrics delivered with a cheeky, spirited, and intelligent flair. Despite these controversies, his professionalism, respectfulness, and reliability have always stood out. His incredible stage energy and dedication to his family are commendable, as is his resilience in the face of adversity. Now back on the ragga scene with a slightly slower pace, Yellowman’s witticisms remain sharp and melodic. His contributions to reggae and dancehall continue to resonate, showing that his spirit and talent are as enduring as ever.
